Indian Bend Wash Underpass at Chaparral Road

Project Overview

This project will create a new pedestrian underpass along the Indian Bend Multi-use Path on the east side of Hayden Road under Chaparral Road. The project will increase safety at this busy intersection by reducing conflicts and allow more green light time for vehicles by reducing bike and pedestrian traffic.

The project will:

• Create a separated crossing for bicyclists and pedestrians along the Indian Bend Wash multi-use path near Chaparral Park.
• Reduce conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians/bicyclists at the intersection.
• Increases green signal time for turning vehicles.
• Utilizes a key design feature found at other legs of this intersection as well as throughout the city’s transportation system.

Project Update

Construction work will begin May 20 and take place though January 2025.  

To expedite construction, Chaparral Road will be closed to all traffic just east of Hayden Road June 3 – Sept. 1. The existing east/west pedestrian underpass just south of Chaparral Road and portions of the Indian Bend Wash multi-use path adjacent to Chaparral Road will be closed for the duration of the project. The loop path around Chaparral Lake is fully open. Please see the map for detour routes.

In general, work will take place, Monday – Friday between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Occasional night and weekend work will be necessary for the installation of a waterline being built in conjunction with this project and due to high temperatures.
